PETA grant enables scientists to guide Chinese officials in non-animal test use

Norfolk, Va. -- Chinese officials are in the final stages of approving the use of the country's very first non-animal test method for cosmetics ingredients, thanks to guidance from scientists funded by PETA. The 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake Phototoxicity Assay, which tests chemicals for their potential toxicity when they come into contact with sunlight and is already in widespread use in the U.S. and the E.U., is scheduled to be accepted in China by late summer. Until now, China has required cosmetics companies to test ingredients and products only on animals.

PETA awarded a grant to scientists at the Institute for In Vitro Sciences(IIVS) late last year after learning that China was requiring cosmetics companies Avon, Este Lauder, and Mary Kaywhich had been on PETA's list of companies that don't test cosmetics on animals for decadesto pay for tests on animals in order to market their products in China. Scientists from IIVS traveled to China several times to offer their expertise and guidance.

"We're delighted that this grant has helped jump-start the acceptance of non-animal tests in China and grateful to Chinese officials for being so open to these discussions," says PETA Vice President of Laboratory Investigations Kathy Guillermo. "We congratulate them for acting swiftly to implement the first of several available non-animal tests."

Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

We saw a lot of things back at CES, and from the PC makers, it was mainly new Ultrabooks. Samsung, however, did present a pair of "regular" notebooks, and it looks like they're just about to stretch their legs in the UK. The Series 5 550P is available in 15- and 17-inch varieties, sporting 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900 displays respectively. Calling the shots will be quad-core Ivy Bridge Core i7 chips supported by 8GB of RAM. Graphics are dished up by a 2GB GeForce GT 650M, and there's a Blu-ray optical drive plus capacity for up to 2TB of storage. Like the Series 7, sound is handled by integrated JBL speakers complete with "Max Bass Boost" subwoofer -- crikey! Lower specification models will also be available (swapping the Blu-ray for DVD, and using shared graphics) when they hit UK stores this month.

In Milan, more residents answer to Hu than Ferrari

A list of the most common names in Milan revealed the extent to which immigration has changed the character of the business-oriented city.?

For decades the family name of ?Brambilla? has been by far the most common in Milan ? to the point that throughout Italy, where family names were originally strongly associated with geography, people still jokingly refer to Milan folks as ?Mister Brambillas? or ?Sciur Brambilla? (?sciur? being the world for ?Sir??in Milanese dialect).?

So when the local council published a list of the most common names in the city last week, many were surprised to find out that Milan has many more residents known as ?Mister Hu? than ?Mister Brambilla.?

Among the ten most common family names in Milan, three were of Chinese origin, pointing out how ethnically diverse this city in northern Italy has become. On the list, ?Rossi," a name common in Italy but not closely associated with the North, comes first, while Hu, of Chinese origin, is a close second. They are followed by five other typically Italian (but not typical specifically of Milan) names. In eighth is another Chinese name, Chen, while uber-Milanese ?Brambilla? comes only ninth, followed by yet another Chinese name, Zhou.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

In the last three decades, a growing numbers of migrants, both from the rest of Italy and from abroad, have settled in Milan, mostly drawn by job prospects in the most business-oriented region of the country. Today one in every five Milan residents is either a foreign national or a descendant of migrant workers.

The Chinese community is one of the oldest in the city, dating back to the first wave of the immigration in the early 1900s. While some other nationalities, particularly from?Eastern Europe and North Africa,?are more numerous, Chinese names are predominant because there is less variety among last names.

?To us this whole comes as no surprise,? Luigi Sun, a representative of Milan's Chinese community of Milan, told the daily newspaper?Republica. ?We have known for a long time Hu is one of the most common names in the city. We have more serous stuff to think about.?

The most common names in Milan:?

  1. Rossi (Italy's most common name)
  2. Hu (Chinese)
  3. Colombo (most common in northern Italy, but not necessarily associated with Milan; the famous explorer Cristoforo Colombo, known in English as Christopher Columbus, was from Genoa)
  4. Ferrari (associated both with central and northern Italy)
  5. Bianchi (another very common name throughout the country)
  6. Russo (a variant of Rossi)
  7. Villa (a typical Milan name)
  8. Chen (Chinese)
  9. Brambilla (once thought to be Milan's most common name)
  10. Zhou (Chinese)

Is Telephobia Really a Thing? [Phones]

It's no secret that people are talking on the phone less. We're texting, we're emailing, we're Gchatting, we're Facebooking. There have been many articles bemoaning the death of the phone call in recent months, and Nielsen said in a December report that voice calls have dropped by 12 percent since 2009, while text messaging has absolutely blown up. Nintendo patent application tech tracks your DS from above, serves as tour guide

Image

Nintendo is already guiding you through the Louvre with a 3DS, but a newly published US patent application takes that kind of tourism to a very literal new level. Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto's concept describes a way to direct lost tourists by beaming position information through an overhead grid of infrared transmitters to a mobile device (portrayed as a DS Lite) held by the confused visitor below. The handheld then talks wirelessly to a server that lights up floor displays with maps and directions, and a helpful app on the device lets visitors pick their route while they read up on sightseeing tips. Like with any patent, there's no certainty that Nintendo will act on the idea and start wiring up museums with IR blasters, but the January 2012 patent may still be fresh in a frequently inventive mind like Miyamoto's.
