FEATURE-Parma mayor becomes Italy's most-watched politician

Sun May 27, 2012 4:00am EDT

* Pizzarotti's win dealt stunning blow to traditional parties

* Hails from comic Beppe Grillo's Five-Star Movement

By Silvia Aloisi

PARMA, Italy, May 27 (Reuters) - Federico Pizzarotti was an unknown, 38-year-old computer technician at a bank until a few weeks ago. Just four days after being elected the mayor of Parma, he has become the most-watched political figure in Italy.

Pizzarotti's leap to fame comes thanks to the grassroots Five-Star Movement, led by comedian Beppe Grillo, which dealt a stunning blow to the parties that have governed Italy for the past two decades in this month's local elections.

Pizzarotti has astonished observers of the Italian political scene by emerging from obscurity to become the first Five-Star candidate to run one of the country's major cities.

The movement, which was created just three years ago and relies extensively on the Internet, has become the country's second most popular party with more than 18 percent support and more than half of Italians would consider voting for it, according to opinion polls.

"Two weeks ago, nobody knew who I was. I feel quite a bit of weight on my shoulders, everybody is watching us," Pizzarotti told Reuters in an interview in a frescoed chamber in Parma's 15th-century town hall.

The success of the protest movement reflects a Europe-wide trend seen from Greece to Germany as the economic crisis has eroded the standing of traditional political parties, blamed for the worst downturn since World War Two.

Like the Northern League 20 years ago, the Five-Star Movement is gaining momentum in Italy's economic heartland in the north. Parma, famous for Parmesan cheese and cured ham, is one of the region's most prosperous cities, and home to almost 190,000 people.

In blue jeans, tennis shoes and a purple sweater, Pizzarotti still seems uncomfortable with media attention, unlike the movement's founder, Grillo, who makes full use of the limelight to blast a scandal-prone elite that has overseen more than a decade of economic stagnation in Italy.

Grillo has also tapped into growing unease with austerity measures and recession by attacking Prime Minister Mario Monti's government of technocrats, which created 24 billion euros ($30 billion) in new taxes this year alone.

Something like an Italian Michael Moore, Grillo's language is irreverent and outlandish. He uses the most vulgar Italian swear words without hesitation, and awards his political rivals colourful nicknames.

Monti is "Rigor Montis," and former Premier Silvio Berlusconi is the "psycho-midget". Italy's established parties are dead, he says, and their leaders are "zombies, vampires, mummies".

The bear-like Grillo, who sports a beard and a mop of tangled white hair, says Italy should dump the euro, devalue the lira, and force foreign banks to accept debt payments - at a loss - in the new currency.

The baby-faced Pizzarotti does not look like Grillo and does not sound like Grillo.

As mayor, his biggest challenge will be managing Parma's 600-million-euro ($750 million) debt, and he will probably need to negotiate with banks Grillo usually derides as the root of the crisis.

"One should not demonise banks. They have a fundamental role in everybody's life," Pizzarotti said.

Pizzarotti chooses his words carefully and does not swear. Instead of attacking rivals, he talks about finding "common ground". He sidesteps the question of the euro, saying he is not an economist.

"We do different jobs," Pizzarotti said of the movement's leader. "He's our loudspeaker, he shakes up people's consciences. He is like a plough that shifts the earth. We are the ones planting the seeds."

"During the campaign, some people told me they didn't like Grillo. I told them that Grillo is not coming to govern here. I am," he said.

FROM MOVEMENT TO PARTY

The change has brought a minor revolution to the familiar cast of middle-aged and elderly men who dominate Italian politics but not everyone is convinced.

"I am puzzled. Parma has a lot of problems. It's good to see all these new, clean faces but you need experienced people to run a city," said bar owner Maria Enrica Galli.

Grillo refuses to call the movement a party, and bans his candidates from going on TV talk shows. The Internet, his blog and social networks are the movement's main means of communication.

It accepts no public campaign financing, unlike the millions of euros pocketed by the established parties every year, funding itself instead from the proceeds of Grillo's stand up shows, and sales of books, videos and T shirts. Pizzarotti spent just over 6,000 euros ($7,500) on his entire campaign.

But with national elections looming early next year and Italy still dangerously enmeshed in the euro zone crisis, the Five Star Movement will come under increasing scrutiny as it seeks to convert its local success to the national stage.

"Grillo and his people have a big job ahead, because a grassroots movement is one thing, but it's quite another thing to organise a real party," said James Walston, a political analyst at the American University in Rome.

"Where there is the smell of power, all sorts of people come out of the woodwork and they will have to work very carefully to maintain their purity," he said.

What is clear is that the thirty-somethings who make up the political bloc have a lot to learn.

In fact, Pizzarotti and his 19 council members are taking a crash course on administrative law from local professors, starting on Thursday, and he has put up an ad on Grillo's blog seeking an experienced administrator.

"We're looking for a person with experience managing the mechanics of city government to be director general as soon as possible. No criminal record, not tied to traditional parties, with proven competence," the ad read, inviting email resumes.

Even handling the time demands of his new job is a challenge for Pizzarotti. As he spoke in the interview, his wife Cinzia kept interrupting.

"We're running late. We've got loads to do. You need to learn to manage your time," she said.

Knicks Hire Woodson as Head Coach

A multisource video news service that highlights nuances in reporting from media outlets around the world.

BY MEGAN RICE

Practice makes perfect and what better way to practice becoming a head coach than getting hired after an interim season. New York 1 reports on who the Knicks decided to keep in charge next year.

?And Mike Woodson will stay on as Knicks coach. The team dropped the interim tag from Woodson and gave him a multi-year contract. Woodson coached the Knicks to an 18-6 record and their first playoff win in 11 years after Mike D'antoni left mid-season.?

With any job in the Big Apple comes speculation. But, ESPN?s NBA Analyst Stephen A. Smith says the Knicks made the right choice.

?There haven't been many times when the New York Knicks have done something right. So it's nice to see that they finally did something sensible...?

Woodson beat out some stiff competition in the likes of the NBA record 11-time champion coach Phil Jackson. Fox Sports reports he will be there as long as some of the Knicks? star players.

?Sources indicated Jackson was interested -- and Jerry Sloan may have been, too. But they'll have to wait as Woodson gets what's believed to be a three-year deal, the length of service left on the pacts of Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and Amar'e Stoudemire.?

If being a head coach in a major city doesn?t bring enough pressure, having NBA coaching legend Phil Jackson in your rear-view certainly will. A Yahoo! Sports columnist wrote earlier this month the iconic coach was actually the better choice.

?Mike Woodson is a solid NBA coach, but he doesn?t have the clout to make this work the way that Jackson can... The Knicks don?t need Jackson for the sake of his r?sum?, his stature, but for his ability to get talent ? especially talent at odds like ?Melo and Amar?e ? to play together.?

Regardless of what the critics think, Woodson has the job, so it?s time for him to roll up his sleeves and get to work. According to a New York Times writer, Woodson?s job includes some tall tasks.

?It is now up to Woodson, who once coached the Atlanta Hawks, to find a way to blend the scoring talents of Anthony and Amar?e Stoudemire?s, a goal that has eluded the Knicks the past two seasons.

3-D isn't big selling point for HDTV buyers, but smart TVs may get hot

19 hrs.

I love to say "I told you so," but this one was so super obvious it?doesn't even feel good: 3-D isn't a big motivator for HDTV buyers.

Despite a dramatic?rise in sales of 3-D HDTVs, only?14 percent of consumers interested in, or expecting to purchase, a flat-panel TV in the next 6 months call 3-D a ?must have? feature, according to the NPD Group.

Here's the thing: HDTVs are awesome, and the technology that gives a TV the power to show 3-D imagery?only makes a TV's picture more awesome (as we discussed in the video below). It's just that actual?3-D viewing will remain a limited attraction due to gear requirements ??special glasses, Blu-ray players and cable service add-ons ? a generally underwhelming lineup of 3-D?movies and, let's face it, no clear reason why we need to see things in 3-D in the first place.

"I'm not ready to call 3-D a gimmick," said Ben Arnold,?director of industry analysis for the NPD Group, in a phone interview.?"But?how much it adds to the viewing experience is debatable."

What about smart TV?
Explicit demand for Internet connectivity is not currently?much greater?than demand for 3-D.?According to a separate 2011?survey by NPD Consumer Tracker, connectivity was cited as "important" in about?20?percent of?TV?purchases.?But the perceived need for an Internet-enabled TV is likely to rise.

"Anything that expands content options has more of a future than something that's simply a feature," Arnold told me. Besides, connectivity doesn't necessarily come with the same kind of baggage 3-D requires. "You don't have to buy glasses, you don't have to have special content from your TV provider," said Arnold.?"The cost of entry is much lower than it is for 3-D, I suppose."

My?contention, one that Arnold agrees with, is that we're only at the beginning of the smart TV revolution. Meanwhile, this whole 3-D may well just blow over.

Try to remember smartphones before the iPhone. Think back hard. Interfaces were clunky, functionality was limited, we weren't totally sure what to do with these things, but we knew they were "better" than our old dumbphones.?

That's essentially?the current state of connected TV: Top hardware companies that have no track record for designing user interfaces are pushing out TVs that make sense on paper, but in the living room fall flat. (And not "flat" in a good way.)

"There's a lot of fragmentation in connected TVs," Arnold told me,?"but if iOS or Android comes along on three or four manufacturer's TVs, then you have the next step in that industry's evolution." Is this all a precursor to an iOS-powered Apple iTV? Perhaps a worthy Android competitor to it? The rise of truly great smart TVs is far?more likely than smart TVs merely?fading back into the woodwork ? as I imagine 3-D soon will.

In the meantime, connected, 3-D capable TVs are selling like mad, even if the people buying them don't buy them for either.

"Sales of 3-D TVs are on the rise in the U.S.," reports the?NPD Group's Retail Tracking Service.?"3-D TVs accounted for 11 percent of all flat-panel TV sales in Q1, nearly double that of last year, and 22 percent of all 40+ inch sets sold were 3-D."

Get 'em while they're hot!

Umbrellas Are Not Just For Rain ? The Avanti Reader

Two things are true: April showers bring May flowers and lawsuits are expensive. ?But, while it is obvious to use an umbrella in the rain, it is not quite as obvious to use an umbrella to protect your financial assets. ?Consider the following worst case scenario: you have a good driving record and carry insurance with above average limits. ?The problem is that you are involved in an accident resulting in significant injury to multiple people in the other car. Your limits aren?t going to go very far and once your policy limits are gone then you are personally responsible for the rest. If you don?t think you might get sued, then think again. ?The cost of medical care is on the rise and litigation is costly.

An umbrella policy is literally what it sounds like ? a policy that steps in to provide high limits above your auto or homeowners policy. ?In some cases the umbrella will drop down to provide liability coverage for things that may be excluded on other liability policies. ?How big should your umbrella be? ?Well that depends. ?Typical limits are $1,000,000 and the cost is very reasonable.

Although specific terms and conditions vary, an umbrella policy provides an extra layer of protection for a wide array of liability scenarios. ?Remember that it?s not just an auto accident that can get you into trouble. ?Imported Spanish tile looks great on the patio?that is until someone slips and falls.

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announces cloud-based, virtualized Kepler GPU technology and GeForce GRID gaming platform

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announces cloud-based, virtualized Kepler GPU technology

We're here at NVIDIA's GPU technology conference here in San Jose, California and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang just let loose that his company plans to put Kepler in the cloud. To make it happen, the company has created a virtualized Kepler GPU tech, called VGX, so that no physical connections are needed to render and stream graphics to remote locations. So, as Citrix brought CPU virtualization to put your work desktop on the device of your choosing, NVIDIA has put the power of Kepler into everything from iPads to netbooks and mobile phones.

While the virtualized GPU has application in an enterprise setting, it also, naturally, can put some serious gaming power in the cloud, too. Fear not, for Jen-Hsun's crew has created GeForce GRID technology that leverages Kepler's cloud capabilities to augment online gaming services like Gaikai by greatly reducing input latency by up to 30ms. Naturally, NVIDIA's not spilling the secret sauce that makes it happen, but you can read all about the new technology at the PR and source below.

FXI Cotton Candy ICS-in-a-USB-Thumb Drive Almost Ready for Worldwide Primetime, Android on Any PC for Only $199

We have covered the FXI Cotton Candy before, the Android thumb drive that allows you to virtualize our favorite OS on any computer that you want. Since we have heard from them, they?ve been getting their ducks in order, and now the little USB-drive-that-could is ready to launch by the end of this month, in?Scandinavia. And while FXI is promising Android 4.0 pre-installed on this device by launch, the demo that Engadget was shown was still running Gingerbread. Either way, the stick has enough specs to run either smoothly.

This little thumb drive is more than meets the eye, packing a?1.2GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor alongside a monster quad-core?Mali-400MP GPU. There is 1GB of RAM inside but for other storage than that you will have to turn to use the microSD card slot on the side. On one end of the stick a USB 2.0 connector lets you connect to your PC of choice but the other end features a full HDMI connector that is ready for 1080p output. All in all, this little thumb drive is pretty snazzy, let?s hope that it comes to the States soon enough. At the price of $199, what would you use this for?

'Monster sunspot' may foretell powerful solar flares, says NASA

A huge sunspot spanning more than 60,000 miles could erupt, sending high energy radiation into space.

An enormous sunspot group has taken shape on the surface of the sun, hinting that our star may soon start spouting off some powerful storms.

The huge sunspot complex, known as AR 1476, rotated into Earth's view over the weekend. It measures more than 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) across, researchers said. Scientists with NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory mission, a space-based telescope watching the sun, dubbed the solar structure a "monster sunspot" in a Twitter announcement.

AR 1476 is big enough for amateur astronomers with decent equipment to spot from their backyards, weather permitting. (Warning:?Never look at the sun directly with telescopes or the unaided eye. Special filters are required for safe solar viewing to avoid serious eye damage.)?

"With at least four dark cores larger than Earth, AR 1476 sprawls more than 100,000 km from end to end, and makes an easy target for backyard solar telescopes," the website Spaceweather.com reported Monday (May 7).

Sunspots are temporary dark patches on the surface of the sun that are caused by intense magnetic activity. These structures sometimes erupt into?solar flares, which send high-energy radiation streaming into space.

Solar physicists classify flares into three main categories: C, M and X, with C being the least powerful and X the strongest. X-class flares can cause long-lasting radiation storms in Earth's upper atmosphere and trigger radio blackouts. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts in the polar regions and occasional minor radiation storms, while C flares have few noticeable consequences.

AR 1476 has already proven quite active, firing off a number of C flares?over the past few days. And another sunspot group, AR 1471, erupted Monday evening with one that seems?to be an M1, one of the least powerful M flares, according to Spaceweather.com.

Big solar flares are often associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive clouds of solar plasma that streak through space at 3 million mph (5 million kph) or more.?If these clouds hit Earth, they can wreak havoc, spawning geomagnetic storms that can disrupt GPS signals, radio communications and power grids. CMEs also often super-charge the northern and southern lights, providing dazzling shows for skywatchers at high latitudes.

Monday evening's eruption from AR 1471 apparently generated an Earth-directed CME, which should hit Earth sometime Wednesday morning (May 9) Eastern time, researchers said.?

After remaining surprisingly quiet from 2005 through 2010, our star began waking up last year, spouting off numerous powerful flares and CMEs.

Most experts expect such outbursts to continue over the next year or so. Solar activity waxes and wanes on an 11-year cycle, and scientists think the current one ? known as Solar Cycle 24 ? will peak in 2013.

Britney Spears and Demi Lovato to Join The X Factor, Fox Confirms at Upfronts

Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will join L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell as judges on The X Factor, Fox confirmed at its upfront presentation this afternoon.

Spears, one of the most successful and celebrated artists in pop music history, gives the show A-list star power as it gears up for its sophomore season.

Lovato is no slouch herself, having become an accomplished singer and actress with a devoted and engaged young fan base. Not bad for the age of 19.

“I'm absolutely delighted that Britney and Demi are joining us,” said Cowell, who removed Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger at the end of last season.

“Britney Spears remains one of the biggest stars in the world, she's talented, fascinating – and I believe she knows exactly how to spot The X Factor."

"Demi's had an amazing career in music, TV and film for someone her age. She's young, confident, and enthusiastic," he added of his other panelist.

"It's important that she speaks to our younger audience. The new panel will be dynamic and will work really well with the changes to the show.”

Spears joining The X Factor has basically been a done deal for weeks now, added,  “I couldn't be more excited to join The X Factor judging panel."

"I'm a huge fan of the show and now I get to be a part of the action. Simon and L.A. better watch out!”

Lovato, who reportedly beat out Miley Cyrus for the final spot, said: “I'm so thrilled to join this legendary group of judges on The X Factor."

"To be able to spend each week with Simon, L.A. and Britney watching the best that America has to offer is truly a dream come true.”

Will Britney Spears make a good judge on The X Factor?

What about Demi Lovato?

'Survivor: One World': How The Women Won

'The guys — they had no unity,' fourth-place finisher Christina Cha tells MTV News of scoring show's first ever all-girl finale.
By Josh Wigler

Kim Spradlin
Photo: MTV News

Kim Spradlin isn't the only "Survivor: One World" winner. OK, technically she is — that cool $1 million is firmly in her bank account — but the season's four finalists can also take comfort in knowing that they made "Survivor" history together: For the first time in 24 seasons, there was not a single man left standing among the final five contestants.

The feat is all the more impressive considering where the women began. At the outset of "One World," the two tribes were separated on gender lines, with the men of Manono showcasing their clear physical advantage with two early immunity wins. It certainly didn't help that the women of Salani were turning on each other, with in-fighting dominating much of their air time in the season's earliest episodes.

Eventually, the women pulled themselves together to stage one of the most impressive comebacks in "Survivor" history, knocking five men out in a row and cutting out the final male — the unforgettable Tarzan — one vote later. So after such a rocky start, how did Salani find the strength to rally together and get rid of the men?

"I think it's because we had a rocky start, I believe that's why we ended up with five women at the end," Kim told MTV News at the "One World" finale on Sunday night. "We had to learn to trust each other. We really had to get each other's backs and become a group."

"There was a day when we all just stood around. We held each other's hands. We were like, 'You know what? We can do this,' " third-place finisher Chelsea Meissner said. "I think it was that first challenge we won against the guys, where they were really ahead of us and we came out of nowhere and won it. We all hugged and it was that moment where we realized, 'We can do this. We can so do this.' "

Christina Cha, who finished the season in fourth place, credited the women's success to the men's willingness to cannibalize each other. "That was what I noticed about the guys — they had no unity," she said. "The guys weren't united from day one."

Another factor, according to runner-up Sabrina Thompson: The men simply were not needed. "You don't need a man in this game to come get [you] fire, to do this or do that," she said. "Once we started winning challenges, we knew we could do this."

In a season dominated by precisely one person, one would think that the plan to get rid of all of the men stemmed from winner Kim. But one of her fellow finalists remembers things differently.

"You know what? I'm going to take credit for this one Kim, OK?" fifth-place finisher Alicia Rosa weighed in, recalling the fall of the men with the same firecracker glee that made her such a memorable competitor all year long. "I [outlined] who the five girls were, from the beginning, and that we were going to wipe [the men] off the island. That, to me, was my biggest dream come true, to do that. I always said that on the island: 'We have to do this. We have to do this. Do not play with those men. It is not going to happen! '"

Not to say that the self-proclaimed mastermind of the men's demise isn't without some regrets.

"I will say I wish Matt had used a little bit more of his Southern charm. Maybe he would've lasted a little bit longer," Alicia laughed. "He was really nice to look at!"

Thunderbolt on Windows gets hands-on, lacks Mac's hot-swapping

Thunderbolt's 10-gigabit interface is only just making its way to Windows after spending more than a year as a Mac-only feature, so it's not surprising that a lot of questions surround how well the Apple- and Intel-developed connection works for those of a Microsoft persuasion. A thorough test at AnandTech of one of the first motherboards to support the spec on Windows PCs, an Ivy Bridge-ready board from MSI, has shown some positive signs along with a few flies in the high-speed ointment. The good news? Most general storage devices will work as expected with a minimum of fuss, and you can even get some features of Apple's Thunderbolt Display working if you're willing to accept a lack of pre-supplied software brightness controls and USB support. The bad news comes mostly in the absence of true hot-plugging like on the Mac: if a device isn't plugged into the Thunderbolt port on boot, Windows won't see it. Professionals who need everything to be just perfect will want to wait, then, but bandwidth lovers will still find something to like if they're willing to build Thunderbolt-equipped PCs themselves.

Samsung Galaxy S III: Pentile Super AMOLED used 'because it lasts longer'

Samsung Galaxy S III: Pentile Super AMOLED used 'because it lasts longer'

Nice processor, shame about the Pentile. It's something that several people have been saying about Samsung's new chest-beating flagship. So why didn't it plump for the warmer Super AMOLED Plus found on both its predecessor and the bigger-boned Galaxy Note? According to Samsung's spokesperson, it's because those blue sub-pixels that are absent on Super AMOLED displays degrade faster than their red and green allies. With the aim of keeping its phones healthily glowing for at least 18 months, it made the decision to go with the Pentile formation. Compared to the Galaxy Nexus, which matches the resolution of the Galaxy S III, Samsung has also shrunk the gaps between pixels on its newest phone in an effort to reduce complaints leveled at its Super AMOLED technology -- although we didn't notice it all that much under our microscope.

Back at this year's eventful CES, Nuance announced it was launching a platform to bring voice recognition services to connected TVs, among other devices. Now, just a few months later, the communications outfit's taking credit for the voice features packed inside Sammy's 2012 Smart TVs. Essentially, this means those speaking commands used to control the Smart Hub, applications like Skype and even web surfing are all powered by Nuance's Dragon technology. The move itself isn't a surprising one, given Nuance's credibility within the industry. So, now you know who's making it all happen the next time you're telling that ES8000 what to do.

Faced with Breivik's unflinching account, Norway surprises world with its civility

A reporter covering Anders Behring Breivik's trial marvels at the degree of civility Norwegians have shown him, considering the brutality of the July 2011 terror attacks and his lack of remorse.

In the first two weeks of Anders Behring Breivik's trial, the Norwegian man reiterated his conviction that he did the right thing when he killed 77 people on July 22, 2011 ? even if it meant shooting unarmed Labor party youth members as young as 14 trapped on an island or bombing government buildings in Oslo. Those killed were??legitimate political targets,? he said.

The attacks were ?gruesome but necessary" for preventing Labor from continuing to undermine Norwegian society with its lenient immigration policies, Mr. Breivik said. The party had betrayed the country by promoting the Islamic colonization of Norway and ipso facto the ethnic cleansing of indigenous Norwegians. He would do it all again, he said.?

International onlookers have been shocked to see how civil the whole trial is proceeding, given the scale and brutality of his crimes ? together they are?the worst national tragedy the country has experienced since World War II ??and Breivik's lack of remorse.?

On April 16, the first day of the 10-week trial, a lineup of prosecutors, forensic psychiatrists, and the legal counsel for the victims all approached Breivik in court to shake his hand. Wearing a suit and neatly trimmed beard, he politely extended his right hand to greet them. Outside, people lined up orderly to enter Oslo District Court. There was not a single sign denouncing him, nor any banners calling for the death penalty.

On the second day of the trial, he was allowed to begin his six-day testimony of what happened in the years leading up to the attack, including his preparation for that day. At the end of the first week he recounted, in chilling detail, of how, after packing a ham and cheese sandwich that morning, he shot and killed 69 people at the Labor party youth summer camp on Ut?ya with a Glock pistol and Ruger semi-automatic rifle.

If this all sounds surreal, that?s because it is.?

It is surreal to see a well-dressed upper class man sit in a court and calmly explain how he killed Norwegians to prevent Norway?s demise. It?s incomprehensible to hear how a man, who supposedly had all the economic means and generous provisions of a cradle-to-grave welfare system, could turn into Norway?s most notorious killer in modern times. And that is part of what scares Norwegians: the thought that he is one of them.?

Despite the atrocity of his crimes and his behavior, Norwegians still want to see him get a fair trial. But that means?he has a legal right to explain himself in court, even if there is a risk that he spreads his propaganda. The trial is also key in determining Breivik's sanity, which is at the crux of this case. The prosecution even defended his right to keep reading from his prepared speech on his first day of testimony in spite of protests from the legal counsel for the victims, who were offended by his one-hour long monologue.?

Report: Apple dumping Google for own Maps app in iOS 6

Granted, Apple and Google aren't quite the bosom buddies they once were, but how far is Cupertino going to free itself from the Android-maker? Well, Apple's picked up a number of mapmakers and is now reportedly getting ready to unveil a Google map competitor for iOS. 9to5Mac is reporting that the mapping solution will be in-place for the next major version of the mobile operating system, combining technologies gathered with the acquisition of Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9. The star of the show is said to be the 3D mode with graphics nabbed from C3. All Things D has "independently confirmed" the forthcoming app reinvention, with sources adding, (hopefully a bit hyperbolically) that it will "blow your head off." According to rumors, we'll be finding out a lot more come WWDC next month.

Want To Know What Apple Will Do Next In Mobile Commerce? Check Out The Pirq It?s Giving To Employees

Pirq screenshotAs device makers like RIM, Samsung and Nokia incorporate NFC technology into their mobile devices, Apple has been radio silent on what its plans will be in mobile commerce and payments. But a deal that is getting announced today could be a clue to one area where Apple might see a big opportunity. Apple has signed on with Pirq, a startup from Seattle, to offer food and drink daily deals to its employees in the Bay Area, with the service working by way of an iPhone app, location-based technology, and a Microsoft Tag code to redeem the discounts. A source tells TechCrunch that this is the first part of a potential "four phase" implementation that could see Apple offering a deals service out to all iPhone users.
