Junior dos Santos talks title defense against Alistair Overeem
Junior dos Santos reflects on Alistair Overeem's fight with Brock Lesnar and looks forward to a title defense against the Dutch kickboxer according to tatame.com.
"I thought Brock would move forwards, I hoped more of him. But he told me on the octagon he felt the knees and kicks of Overeem and that he thought he broke his rib. I saw it and it was really red....He's completely right to retire since he doesn't feel fine when fighting anymore," dos Santos said.
Overeem is set to be the next challenger for dos Santos' UFC heavyweight title after he scored a TKO victory over Lesnar in the first round at UFC 141. Overeem certainly made it look easy in his UFC debut as he out-muscled Lesnar and punished him with devastating knees before finishing the fight with a leg kick to the liver. Despite the strong performance, dos Santos is not afraid of his challenger.
"Each fight is different and you gotta be prepared for your next opponent the best way you can. I got to the title with much effort and I'll do my best to remain as the champion. Overeem is a very strong fighter, but there's no easy fight when you're fighting a title fight. He's big, but he ain't two," dos Santos said.
It wasn't long ago when dos Santos debuted with the UFC in a similar fashion to Overeem when he KO'ed Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90. Thereafter, dos Santos won his next seven fights and captured the heavyweight title in his last bout against Cain Velasquez at UFC on Fox 1.
Dos Santos recently underwent a successful knee surgery to repair a?torn meniscus and no date has been set for the dos Santos vs. Overeem heavyweight title fight.
