Raipole and slot loaded speaker discussion.

  1. Default Raipole and slot loaded speaker discussion.

Posted in the right place this time...

Recently spent some time reading about riapole speakers. I am looking for a better understanding of them, slot loaded speakers, and the pros and cons inherent to them.

It seems like a vertical slot loaded base section could give a wider sound stage because a longer sound wave frequency passing through a slot narrower than that wave length produces a wider radiation pattern on the other side. And the loading of a riapole gives a db increase of 6-9 db.

Are there diffraction or distortion increases because of the sound being pushed through a orifice?

Seems that a riapole is a "free air" sub set of slot loaded speakers, where as slot loaded speakers can also have sealed or vented boxes?

My curiosity was peaked after seeing some high end speakers with a vertical slot over the base drivers.

Any input or musings are appreciated!

    Thanks, David

What's that? Never heard of them, and it doesn't come up on a search.

I believe he is spelling it wrong,I have seen what he is talking about but cant remember
    proper name. Maybe Ripole?

    Google Ripole subwoofer

The idea of the Ripole, as i understand it, is that the slot loading increases the effective mass and therefore lowers Fs and increases Qts. Just how effective this is would have to depend on the cone mass of the driver. Drivers with high cone mass probably would not see much change. Down sides are the the cavity resonance and the dipole peak would be rather high as a ripole is usually configured. The would translate to low efficiency. Low frequency radiation pattern will not be significantly different than any other form of dipole. Up side is that the cabinet for a single driver can be fairly compact.

There may be other claimed benefits that I am not aware of.

That's what it would do, in the same fashion as any bandpass box does, as that's what it is. Of course the chambers are far too small to see much bandpass action, but it's there.

John is right on the money.

In a word, don't bother. I'm speaking from experience, here

What was your experience with them?

I done some experimenting with them and had decent results so far. When I'm done with some home improvements, I plan on completing the project.

    Hi
Mostly their Inefficiency (even in multiples), compared to same drivers in a box, or even compared to the same drivers on U-baffles or even a flat baffle. They just didn't seem worth the effort.
I've tried building them with both high excursion subwoofer drivers as well as low excursion 15" pro style woofers.

To each his own, but I'm not ever going back down that route again.
