The Wichita Toy Run, an annual event that raises donations for Christmas gifts for children, will replace its traditional motorcycle parade with a rally, to be held in historic Delano on Nov. 4.
Organizers made the decision after discussions with the Wichita police, the Sedgwick County Sheriff?s Office and Delano representatives, according to a news release.
?We feel this is the best way to avoid incidents, accidents and injury to Toy Run participants as well as maintaining the safety of the public,? a statement from the group said. ?The Wichita Toy Run Committee has the welfare of everyone involved as our top priority.?
During last year?s event, two motorcycles were involved in accidents and traffic was blocked at some intersections downtown.
A few weeks ago, the longtime organizer of the Wichita Toy Run, Holly Potelle, died in a motorcycle crash. This year?s event is intended to honor her.
The proceeds from the event will be distributed to charities such as the Salvation Army, Marines Toys for Tots and the Kansas Food Bank.
